Abstract 【Abstract】Objective To investigate the effects and possible causes of ART on the Low birth weight(LBW)of the newborn．Methods Infertility that received fresh IVF／ICSI treatnmnt from six reproductivecenters was included in our study．Naturally conceived pregnancies were selected by computer randomly illatc—hing with age and area．Comparison of the incidences of LBW of the newborn between the group of ART andnaturally control were carried out．Results Totally 12 140 ART newborns and 18 800 naturally conceivednewborns were retrieved．The results showed：(1)The incidence of LBW of ART newborn is higher than thatin the control(22．9％VS 8．5％，P<0．001)；(2)The incidences of LBW of the singleton in ART is lowerthan the eontrol(5．1％VS 6．5％．P<0．001)．and the sanle incidences of the multiple in ART iS also lowerthan the control(43．3％VS 58．3％，P<0．001)；(3)The ratios of LBW in the term singletons is similar(2．O％VS 1．7％，P>0．05)，but the incidence of LBW in premature singletons in ART is lower than theeontrol(30．0％VS 53．1％，P<0．001)；(4)The rates of LBW in term nmltiple in ART is lower than thecontrol(24．4％VS 35．8％，P<0．001)，as well as in premature nmltiple in ART and the control(60．4％VS 75．7％，P<0．001)。Conclusion Multiple pregnancy result in the increased incidence of LBW in thenewborn conceived from ART．Theprocedures of ART itself might lead the growing weight of newborns．
