Abstract 【Abstract】After fertilization in mammals, the embryo gradually changes from maternal factor regulation tozygotic regulation, expressing zygotic transcripts, namely zygotic gene activation (ZGA). Dramatic epigeneticchanges occur, such as histone modification, DNA methylation reprogramming and chromatin remodeling.Abnormalities in epigenetic remodeling can lead to severe developmental defects and even embryo death. Therefore, understanding the epigenetic changes in the ZGA transcripts is crucial to elucidate their pathogenicmechanisms. In this review, the recent advances in DNA methylation reprogramming, histone modificationand chromatin remodeling during the activation of mammalian zygotic genes are reviewed in order to providereferences for further investigation of the epigenetic changes of chromosomes during the activation ofmammalian zygotic genes.
