Clinical efficacy of laparoscopic treatment for ureteral fibroepithelial polyp in children

Abstract
Objective To explore the clinical characteristics of ureteral fibroepithelial polyp (UFP) and the efficacy of laparoscopic surgical treatment in children. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 7 children with UFP admitted to the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University from August 2022 to October 2024, the clinical characteristics and postoperative treatment efficacy of these children were summarized. Results All 7 patients were male. The main clinical manifestations included ipsilateral lumbodorsal pain accompanied by nausea and vomiting, and hematuria was noted in 2 cases. All patients received laparoscopic surgery, with an operative duration ranging from 100 to 180 minutes (mean ± standard deviation: 157.14±27.06 minutes). Five patients achieved uneventful postoperative recovery. Two patients developed acute postoperative obstruction and were treated with ultrasound-guided percutaneous nephrostomy. Secondary pyeloplasty was performed 6 months later. Regular follow-up ultrasonography showed no deterioration of hydronephrosis and no recurrence of initial symptoms. Conclusion Laparoscopic surgery demonstrates favorable clinical efficacy in the treatment of UFP in children. It enables complete polyp resection and relief of urinary tract obstruction, while offering the advantages of minimal trauma and rapid postoperative recovery. Laparoscopic surgery is a flexible and highly reproducible procedure, representing a safe, effective, and preferred surgical approach for pediatric UFP.
