| Bibliometric and visual analysis of current research status and trends related to urinary system development |

Abstract Objective To conduct a bibliometric and visual analysis of the current status and trends of
international research on urinary system development. Method The core collection of the Web of Sciencedatabase was used to search the literatures on urinary system development published from 1990 to 2020.The bibliometric method was performed and the Bibliometrix package in R language was used to analyzethe number of documents published each year, journals, first authors and corresponding authors, countries,research institutions, research fields, citation frequencies, and keywords. The software VOSviewer wasapplied to visually cluster keywords. The Sankey diagram and the strategic coordinate chart of keywordswere analyzed for the evolution of the research themes. Result A total of 4 064 articles wereretrieved, and 1 594 articles related to the development of urinary system were finally included. From
1990 to 2010, an average of (47.0±8.0) articles were published every year. From 2011 to 2020, the numberof publications increased, with an average of (60.6±5.9) articles per year. Totally 619 journals publishedurinary system development related articles, among which Journal of Urology was top (81 articles). As thefirst author, the number of articles published by Gattone V H and Okada T was tied for the
first place ( 5 articles each), and so was the number of articles published by Nishinakamura R, Okada T
and Pot S S as the corresponding author (7 articles each). All the 1 594 articles were from 55 countries, among which theop three were the United States (509 articles), Japan (163 articles) and China (117 articles). All the 1 594 articles werefrom 1 758 institutions, among which the top was the University of Pittsburgh (101 articles). The number ofarticles published by China Medical University ranked 31st (21 articles). All the 1 594 articles were in 93 researchfields, and the top three research fields were urology & nephrology, cell biology and developmental biology.The included articles were cited 51 353 times in total, and the most frequently cited article (938 times) waspublished in 1996. A total of 6 968 keywords were included in the literature, and the top five keywordswere expression (326 articles), kidney (163 articles), mouse (161 articles), rat (147 articles) and cell(143 articles). Using VOSviewer software analysis, the research direction of urinary system developmentmainly focused on two parts: renal dysplasia related diseases, and gene expression and morphogenesisof urinary system development. According to the Sankey diagram, from 1990 to 2020, gene expressionin the development of the urinary system was still the focus of research. According to the strategiccoordinate chart of keywords, the future research trend would be focused on the gene expression. Conclusion The international interest in researches related to the development of the urinary system isuptrend. In the future, the res earches would be dominated by the fi elds of cell biology and developmentalbiology, and continue to explore the mechanism of gene expression regulation, hoping to apply theresults to the researches of diseases related to the abnormal development of the urinary system and tissueengineering.
