Abstract Objective To explore the effect of the environmental toxicants polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on apoptosis of follides in the ovary in vitro. Method The child-bearing period female mice were randomly divided into two groups: control group and PAHs exposure group (0.1 μg/ml, 1 μg/ml, 10 μg/mL).We took out their ovaries under aseptic conditions then culured the ovaries in vitro for 10 days .The structural changes of the ovaries were observed by the light microscope using HE staining .The apoptosis of the granular cells were detected by immunohistochemistry and the atresia follicles were counted . ResultsThe follicle number of the PAHs exposed group was significantly lower than the control group (P < 0.05).Compared with the control group, the expressions of apoptosis protein Caspase 3, Caspases 9 and Bax were increased, the expression of Bcl-2 was decreased. Conclusions Females of reproductive age contacting PAHs will lead to a decrease in the number of ovarian.
