Analysis of influencing factors of family nurturing environment on children's early language development

Objective To understand the family nurturing environment and early language development status of children, explore the relevant influencing factors of children's early language development, and analyze the associations between various factors in the family nurturing environment and outcome of children's early language development. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted to select 408 children aged 18 months who were born from November 2020 to July 2021 and had established medical records at the Department of Child Health Care, West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University. A structured sociodemographic questionnaire, Child Home Nurturing Environment Questionnaire information, family nurturing environment, and children's early language development. Statistical analysis was performed using χ 2 test and binary Logistic regression analysis. Results Of the 408 participants, 379 (92.9%) scored within the normal range on the EIMS total scale, 29 (7.1%) screened positive for language delay. Domain-specific abnormality rates were: 10.8% (n=44) for Part A, 6.4% (n=26) for Part B, and 19.4% (n=79) for Part C. Based on whether the total score of EIMS was normal, univariate analysis revealed that male, frequent electronic screen exposure were statistically significant (all P<0.05). Binary Logistic regression
analysis showed that male, frequent electronic screen exposure were significant independent predictors of
abnormal total EIMS scores (all P<0.05). Based on whether the results of EIMS Part C were normal, binary
Logistic regression indicated that male, lower emotional warmth/environmental atmosphere, and a poor
neglect/punishment environment significantly affected the outcomes of Part C (all P<0.05). Conclusion The
overall level of early language development in children has improved compared to the past, but the proportion of abnormalities in "visual-related perception and understanding" (Part C) is relatively high, attention should be paid to the screening and management of the family nurturing environment, especially the use of electronic products.
